This would be a great book for a book club – that’s why I read it. Included in the narrative are places I know well…Ohio University in Athens, where my daughter studied journalism in the ‘s, and Cincinnati, where I’ve lived most of my life, Chillicothe, where our son and his wife went before a judge to finalize the adoptions of their two children. The agents infiltrated the region, struggling to adopt the latest techniques of detection. It was loud and hot and dirty, and I thought it was the most dangerous place in the world to work. It’s an inspiring story without being precious or sentimental.
In this novel set deep in the Appalachia region of Southern Ohio, a young boy named Jimmy Lee Hickam grows up, dirt poor with an abusive hard-drinking father, a mother and brothers who have little time for him. I absolutely gobbled this book up. It is the poorest road, in the poorest county, in the poorest region of the state.
